De digitalisering van ons dagelijks leven blijft onstuitbaar voortgaan en dat heeft funeste gevolgen voor onze gezondheid. De vermaarde hersenonderzoeker Manfred Spitzer laat op basis van nieuw wetenschappelijk onderzoek zien hoe computergebruik ons digiziek maakt. Dat computergebruik slecht is voor het geheugen weten we sinds zijn bestseller Digitale dementie, maar de gezondheidsrisicos blijven daar niet toe beperkt: stress, depressie, slapeloosheid en een verslechterde motoriek en conditie behoren allemaal tot de risicos. Manfred Spitzer waarschuwt ons voor wat er kan gebeuren wanneer we de digitale media ons leven laten overheersen, maar laat ook zien hoe we onszelf kunnen beschermen.

The book explores interlinkages between women's employment and fertility at both a macro- and a micro-level in EU member states, Norway and Switzerland. Similarly as many other studies on the topic, it refers to the cross-country variation in the macro-context for explaining  cross-country differences in women's labour supply and fertility levels. However, in contrast to other studies, which mainly focus on Western Europe, it extends the discussion to Central and Eastern European countries. Furthermore, it looks at the macro-context from a multi-dimensional perspective, indicating its four dimensions as relevant for fertility and women's employment choices: economic (living standards), institutional (family policies), structural (labour market structures), and cultural (social norms). A unique feature of the study is the development of indices that measure the intensity of institutional, structural, and cultural incompatibilities between women's employment and fertility. These indices are used for ranking European countries from the perspective of the country-specific conditions for work and family reconciliation. A country where these conditions are the worst, but where women are additionally perceived as important income providers, is picked up for an in-depth empirical study of the interrelationship between fertility and women's employment choices. Finally, against the review of theoretical concepts predominantly used for studying interdependencies between fertility and women's labour supply the book assesses the micro-level empirical studies available on the topic and proposes an analytical approach for modelling the two variables. Thereby, it also contributes to methodological developments in the field.

De evaluatie van leerlingen via goed doordachte toetsen is voor de leerkracht geschiedenis een allesbehalve eenvoudige opdracht. Dit Cahier wil met concrete voorbeelden aantonen hoe leerkrachten hun toetsvragen kunnen optimaliseren. Het boek opent met enkele beschouwingen over de didactische functie van de evaluatie en de noodzakelijke correlatie tussen leersituatie en toetsing. Vervolgens wordt aandacht besteed aan de kenmerken en aan de voor- en nadelen van de verschillende vraagvormen (open vragen en de belangrijkste vormen van gesloten vragen). Daaropvolgend wordt de problematiek behandeld van de keuze van de vraagvorm, de kenmerken die iedere toets moet bezitten en de beoordeling van de resultaten. Ten slotte wordt een reeks gesloten vragen aangeboden die afgestemd zijn op specifieke onderwijsdoelen voor het vak geschiedenis. De theoretische inzichten worden zoveel mogelijk geïllustreerd met geselecteerd toetsmateriaal uit een relatief groot aantal Vlaamse ASO en TSO scholen, waardoor het geheel is afgestemd op de reële klaspraktijk.

Until recently, regional labour market imbalances were considered transitory phenomena, a consequence of state failure in generating distorted investment incentives in depressed regions as well as of excessive labour market rigidities. Labour mobility and wage flexibility were at the core of the debate over the causes of and cures for regional labour market imbalances. This book bears witness to the changed perspective of research on these issues. In the recent literature, internal labour migration is depicted as a cause of further divergence between advanced and backward regions, as higher returns on human and physical capital are expected to be paid in those regions where these factors are already concentrated. The book contributes to the debate by presenting important new findings on: a) the reasons why structural change in some sectors causes a slump in some regions, but not in others; b) the extent to which poverty traps explain regional imbalances as compared to such other alternative factors as spatial dependence and nonlinearity in growth behaviour; c) the degree of convergence across EU countries and regions; d) the role of labour mobility in reducing/increasing regional labour market imbalances, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe; e) and the role of an active labour market policy and child care facilities in alleviating the hardship of the weakest segments of the population.
